SILENT FILMS AT THE MENDELSSOHN THEATRE

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)

Saturday, June 15 at 3:30PM  | Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre

In 1920, one brilliant movie jolted the postwar masses and catapulted the movement known as German Expressionism into film history. That movie was The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, a plunge into the mind of insanity that severs all ties with the rational world. Director Robert Wiene and a visionary team of designers crafted a nightmare realm in which light, shadow and substance are abstracted, a world in which a demented doctor and a carnival sleepwalker perpetrate a series of ghastly murders in a small community.

Accompanied with a live score by Frank Pahl and Michael Gould.

The Fabulous Fleischer Cartoons, Restored

Sunday, June 16 at 3:30PM | Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre

Ever wanted to bop with the Boop on the big screen? How about that OG spinach tin poppin’ sailor with his main squeeze Olive Oil? Or Clark Kent pre-CGI? Join us for a screening of restored Fleischer Cartoons with a piano accompaniment by one of Michigan Theater’s in-house organists on the piano at Mendelssohn. This hour long screening of Fleicher “Greatest Hits” is sure to be a treat for those reliving childhood memories or children discovering hand-drawn animations from early cinema.

Accompanied with live piano.

Sponsor: Martin Family Foundation

Silent Films at the Mendelssohn are presented in partnership with the Cinetopia Film Festival. Tickets are $16 and $13 for members of Marquee Arts.
