| Mental health issues, and particularly the impact of untreated trauma in youth, is increasingly being recognized as a serious problem. There is a stigma around mental health issues and the effects of trauma that has led to an epidemic of suicide, depression, and a lack, or avoidance of, necessary treatment. This is particularly true in sports where there has often been a “tough it up” mentality. This “toughen up” attitude, or stigma, ignores mental health issues, yet athletes need mental health awareness and treatment, like all people, to have the best chance at good health, well-being, and a chance to reach their goals. |
