From Chance Encounter to Community Impact: New York Gown Donation Supports 1Families Impacted by Cancer
What began as a chance meeting on vacation (in Egypt of all places!) has blossomed into an extraordinary act of generosity for The Brides Project, a volunteer-run bridal boutique dedicated to supporting families impacted by cancer. During a recent vacation, a long time volunteer and advocate, Ava Slemrod, from The Brides Project struck up a casual conversation with the CEO of Morilee New York, a globally recognized bridal design house known for its elegant and timeless wedding gowns. What started as a simple exchange quickly turned into a heartfelt discussion about purpose,
community, and giving back. Ava shared the mission of The Brides Project—a unique initiative that sells donated wedding gowns, both new and pre-loved, to raise funds for programs at the Cancer Support Community of Greater Ann Arbor. These programs provide free emotional, social, and educational support to individuals and families navigating a cancer diagnosis.
Moved by the organization’s impact and volunteer-driven model, the CEO of Morilee New York was inspired to take action. That conversation ultimately led to Morilee New York donating 264 brand-new wedding gowns to The Brides Project—and they are all stunning!
“These gowns represent so much more than beautiful dresses,” said Bonnie Dockham, Executive Director of the Cancer Support Community of Greater Ann Arbor. “Each one will help
generate critical funding for families facing cancer. It’s a powerful reminder of how one conversation can truly change lives. We are so grateful for volunteers like Ava and partners like
Morilee New York.”
The donated gowns will be sold at The Brides Project’s Ann Arbor boutique at significantly reduced prices, making dream dresses accessible to brides while directly supporting cancer
support services. Proceeds from every gown sold go toward programs that improve quality of life for those affected by cancer, including counseling, support groups, and wellness activities.
Founded in 2011, The Brides Project has built its reputation on community generosity, with donations from individuals, bridal salons, and designers across the country. The boutique offers
hundreds of gowns and is staffed by volunteers committed to making a difference. This latest donation not only expands their inventory but also amplifies their mission—proving
that meaningful connections can happen anywhere, even on vacation.
