SPEAKER: Charlie Shelton: French and the Fur Trade
After a SAHS membership Meeting, there will be a presentation by Charlie Shelton from Huron Clinton Metroparks on the French and the Fur Trade in the 1700s ‘New France’ area that is now the State of Michigan.
The nearly forgotten French period of Michigan history helped to frame our modern life. Michigan’s cultural heritage is deeply influenced in many of our French place names, foods, and daily lives.
What was life like in 1700s ‘New France’? Let’s examine this dynamic time period: the people, the furs, the culture, and the commerce of 1750 Fort Michilimackinac.
In 1715 French soldiers constructed Fort Michilimackinac. This fortified community became the great fur trade center of the Northwest until its relocation to nearby Mackinac Island in 1781. It was here where fur traders and Indians rendezvoused, French and British officers organized war parties and explorers began their journeys into the vast western unknown.
