Salem Area Historical Society Events for January
SPEAKER: Ericka Hartley; Potluck Dinner & Fort St. Joseph
Bring a dish to share with others for the Potluck dinner along with your plate, silverware and something to drink.
After the Potluck dinner and a short SAHS membership Meeting, there will be a presentation on the Archaeology and Collections: Researching Fort St. Joseph by Ericka Hartley. Ericka is an Instructor in the Institute for Intercultural and Anthropological Studies at Western Michigan University and is the Director and Curatorial Fellow for the Fort St. Joseph Archaeological Project.
Archaeological investigations at Fort St. Joseph have unearthed thousands of religious, military, and domestic artifacts, revealing details about the people who once occupied this frontier outpost. Excavations and collection-based research are conducted by the staff and student participants of the Fort St. Joseph Archaeological Project, a partnership between Western Michigan University and the City of Niles, Michigan. Ericka will discuss the archaeological work occurring at the fort, what they have learned about its residents, and the importance of preserving the past for future study.
If you only want to attend the presentation, please arrive at 7pm.
