What is the HALT Drunk Driving Law? In 2021, Congress passed the bipartisan HALT Drunk Driving Act as part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). The law directs the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to create a rule requiring all new passenger vehicles to have built-in passive technology to prevent drunk driving.
A hoax is spreading that calls this lifesaving law a “kill switch” in an effort to derail progress in MADD’s mission to eliminate drunk driving. As MADD points out in its press release, such claims are wrong and Congress has twice rejected attempts to undo this law. MADD believes there will be further efforts to undermine public safety and to undo the HALT Drunk Driving Law due to this false “kill switch” narrative.
Every year, nearly 12,000 people are killed by drunk driving, and hundreds of thousands more are seriously injured. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) estimates this bipartisan law when fully implemented will save more than 10,000 lives each year. Anti-drunk driving technology will prevent these tragedies before they occur. For more details visit madd.org/HALT.
Please email your Representative to urge them to maintain and support implementation of the HALT Drunk Driving Law.
Sincerely,
MADD
