About the Show
London Calling is a celebration of the music of The British Invasion of the 1960’s and Beyond. Dan Martin plays legends like The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, The Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin, but that’s not all! You’ll also hear the U.K.’s best girl singers like Lulu, Dusty Springfield, Petula Clark, and Cilla Black. You’ll get the Liverpool sound of The Merseybeats, and Gerry & The Pacemakers, blues based rockers like Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac and Long John Baldry… and just for flavour; tracks as diverse as Black Sabbath, Chad & Jeremy, The Spice Girls, David Bowie, Adele, Rod Stewart, Ladytron, The Liverbirds, Pearl & The Puppets, The Animals, Lily Allen, Peter & Gordon, Duran Duran, The Moody Blues, Wham, AND SO MUCH MORE!
Hop on the big red bus, get in the taxi, or step inside the phone box… It’s a trip through time and space as Dan Martin invites you to be his companion every Saturday night at 10PM ET on London Calling!
For Dan Martin, the British Invasion never ended. He describes the primary focus of London Calling as the original invasion, but you’ll hear tracks from the seventies second wave, the big eighties wave, and the recent flood of talented female vocalists from the United Kingdom as well. Each week, Dan shares his knowledge of British Music as well as his thoughts on the influx of British fashions, films, and TV shows that accompanied the arrival of those four lads from Liverpool who started it all, and how that music continues to shape pop culture today.
Dan Martin grew up in Southeast Michigan listening to The Beatles, Wings, and other popular music from the UK played on AM radio in the early seventies. He watched the Beatles cartoon as a small child, and bought his first Beatles Lp in junior high. He was inspired to start a band after seeing “A Hard Day’s Night,” but never did find the thousands of screaming girls he thought that having a band would bring. Dan has a lovely and brilliant wife, as well as two sons and three cool cats. He’s worked in radio for more than 22 years, spinning oldies in Lansing, Saginaw, and Ann Arbor, as well as playing other genres of music, doing the news, and making commercials. He loves Jammie Dodgers™ with his PG Tips®, and keeps practising his Höfner bass in the hopes of one day becoming Paul McCartney.
