Yankee Air Museum is open on Veterans Day in honor of our military personnel and their families

Yankee Air Museum will be open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Monday, November 11, 2019, in honor of Veterans Day. The Museum is normally closed on Mondays. Yankee Air Museum is located at 47884 D Street, Belleville, Michigan. Everyone is welcome to visit on this important holiday.

“Veteran’s Day is special to all of us at the Museum. We have a great collection of aircraft and artifacts highlighting our nation’s aviation heritage. Of course, the men and women who have served, or are serving, in our military, as well as their families, have made the freedoms we all enjoy possible. Free admission to all is the least we can do,” said Kevin Walsh, Executive Director of Yankee Air Museum.

Walsh also said that visitors would enjoy seeing the new “Deep Landings” exhibit featuring a Douglas Dauntless dive-bomber that saw combat in North Africa in 1942. This aircraft redeployed to the US and later sank in an aircraft carrier training incident in 1943 near Chicago. The plane was recovered from Lake Michigan in the 1990’s. The National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida loaned the Dauntless to the Museum in 2018.

Beyond any particular aircraft, the Museum’s larger purpose is to help educate people about US aviation and military history. Veterans Day is an appropriate pause on the calendar to honor military service personnel and an exceptional opportunity for the Museum to do so. A tour of the Museum gallery gives the staff an occasion to share their knowledge of military and aviation history. Guests often return the favor by sharing their stories of what they experienced in the service, overseas or at home. New lessons on the bravery and sacrifices made by our military personnel, new perspectives on key historical actions, and increased appreciation of the freedoms we enjoy today result from the interactions Museum staff have with Veterans.

“Our staff and volunteers honor the dedication of Veterans, whenever and wherever they served. We certainly encourage everyone to visit the Museum on Veteran’s Day,” concluded Walsh, saying, “We are confident it will be an enjoyable and enlightening day for all.”

Yankee Air Museum, located at 47884 D Street, Belleville, Michigan on the grounds of historic Willow Run Airport, is open on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, as well as our regular schedule – Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
