The Leslie Science & Nature Center and Ann Arbor Hands-on Museum will not be able to hold its usual in-person summer camp program this year. Even though we can’t gather together in-person, our staff began creating a camp community online right away, bringing our inspirational and educational camp program into camper’s homes.

Camp-at-Home is specially designed to reduce the amount of time campers spend on a screen and encourage children to spend their summer outside exploring and discovering STEM and the natural world. Getting children up, moving, and engaging in science has always been at the core of camp and continues to be an integral part of Camp-at-Home!

Camp-at-home is offering nine one-week long sessions, most appropriate for grades K-5, with a focus on activities children can do on their own. “We have spent the last month getting ready and creating all new content for each week, and are already seeing incredible engagement and learning with our first week of campers!” says Camp Manager Zach Wood.

The new online program includes a kit of materials, five days of STEM videos and downloadable activities designed to be done over a couple of hours each day. Campers will continue to have access to videos and activities throughout the summer, so the exploration and fun can happen on your family’s terms.

From a parent participating in our first week: “I have three children (ages 5, 7, and 9). The activities were terrific for all of them! I felt there was a nice variety between games, lessons, and projects. I appreciate with google classroom that we can also complete things on our own schedule and without deadlines. Thank you so much for all the staff that made this at home camp experience possible!!”

Each session has a different theme, based on favorites from our past summers, including “Science of Flight”, “Engineer it!”, “Cold Blooded Critters”, and more. All can be found on the Camp-at-home website. The goals of Camp-at-home are to focus on: STEM and Environmental Education, Outdoor Exploration with Hands-on Experiences, Reduced Screen Time and Reduced Caregiver Involvement.

“We know parents are having to work and continually adjust to an ever-changing climate right now. Our goal is to provide high-quality, fun and educational activities that parents can choose to help with, but don’t have to help with.” Says Wood. “Each week we provide a parent guide outlining what parents can expect, and which activities we think will require support.”

In addition to the base camp of materials and programming, which only costs $40, there are options to add on an in-person check-in with camp counselors as well as a live program each week. If there are siblings interested in participating, there is no need to pay $40 twice, but we do suggest an extra weekly kit of materials.

“We are also very excited to roll out a scholarship for Camp-at-home, thanks to support from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation.” Says Wood. Families who qualify for free or reduced lunch, or have been adversely impacted by Covid-19, can fill in a form requesting a scholarship for anywhere from just one to all of the weeks of camp. Scholarships will discount our weekly camps by 75% and include a FREE STEM and ART kit for the home.

Families interested in registering can find more information on the website here.

The Mission of the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum and Leslie Science & Nature Center is to create moments of discovery that inspire curiosity, exploration and respect for STEM and the natural world.

Our Vision is a world where curiosity today leads to more purposeful lives tomorrow.
