The Northville Art House cultivates the Spring exhibition In Bloom: A Fresh Look at Flowers in Art

The Northville Art House (Northville, MI) cultivates the Spring exhibition In Bloom: A Fresh Look at Flowers in Art on view April 28 to May 22. In Bloom features four contemporary women artists—Denise Cassidy Wood, Sandy Dekker, Maria Latour, and Shadia Derbyshire—who capture the beauty and vibrancy of flowers with their own distinctive style.

Denise Cassidy Wood enjoys the versatility of acrylic paint and the opportunity it provides to integrate mixed media. She has a great passion for creating colors and textures which bloom into bold, vibrant flowers.

Sandy Dekker loves using fabric, thread, paints and photography. She combines printed fabrics of her floral photographs with free motion quilting to create beautifully textured quilts.

Maria Latour combines textiles with encaustics (hot wax painting) to construct her floral pieces. Her process calls for continual change, reworking, and responding to chance occurrences with the molten wax. Dyed or stitched fabric embedded between layers of wax results in transparencies and a physical yet mysterious sense of depth.

Shadia Derbyshire works primarily in acrylics and collage with a passion for and creating with color. She uses a selection of found papers that are meticulously hand-painted, stained, stamped, and stenciled, then torn to ‘paint’ over her canvas. The process results in dynamic and colorful floral pieces with unique pattern and texture.

In Bloom: A Fresh Look at Flowers in Art can be seen at the Northville Art House, April 28 to May 22, during gallery hours, Wednesday – Thursday 10 am – 6 pm and Friday – Saturday 11 am – 3 pm.
