LESLIE SCIENCE & NATURE CENTER PRESENTS: HIKE N’ HOOTENANNY AND ANIMAL HAUNTS: SENSATIONAL SWAMPS
LESLIE SCIENCE & NATURE CENTER PRESENTS TWO UNIQUE WAYS TO CELERATE FALL!
HIKE N’ HOOTENANNY AND
ANIMAL HAUNTS: SENSATIONAL SWAMPS
Leslie Science & Nature Center’s (LSNC) beloved fall festivities return! Celebrate the season at LSNC’s fall events Hike n’ Hootenanny and Animal Haunts at Furstenberg Nature Area, 2626 Fuller Rd, Ann Arbor, MI 48105. With Hike n’ Hootenanny on Friday, October 18th from 6:00 to 9:00pm and Animal Haunts, a non-scary festive celebration on Saturday, October 19th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Hike n’ Hootenanny
Bring your adult friends and family to Hike n’ Hootenanny for a festive evening of music, beer and hard cider, food, and square dancing under a beautiful autumn night sky. We’ll meet at Furstenberg Nature Area where you’ll learn about Michigan native wildlife, meet some of our resident raptors up close, take a twilight hike, and enjoy an evening in the great outdoors. Don’t forget to grab a partner for a do-si-do on the square dancing floor! Purchase a hot dog, bratwurst, or vegan sausage from Ray’s Red Hots, or bring a “zero waste” picnic dinner to enjoy in the beer garden!
Unlike most programming at LSNC that is catered towards children, Hike n’ Hootenanny gives grownups a chance to take center stage. “I think it’s going to be a great time!” Says Sara Brintnall, Development Manager, “People can come out, enjoy a drink under the night sky, spend time with friends and meet new people while having fun on the dance floor!”
Hike n’ Hootenanny is for participants 21 years or older. We encourage participants to bring lawn chairs or blankets as seating will be limited. Hike n Hootenanny takes place on Friday, October 18th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Furstenberg Nature Area, 2626 Fuller Rd, Ann Arbor, MI 48105. Registration is required by October 14th. Register online at www.lesliesnc.org or by calling (734) 997-1553.
Animal Haunts: Sensational Swamps
Our annual all-ages Animal Haunts features a guided hike around Furstenberg Nature Area, where costumed characters bring Michigan plants and animals to life through storytelling. This year’s skits are all about the flora and fauna that thrive in our marshes and wetlands. Your family will hear stories from a frog, a pitcher plant, a massasauga rattlesnake, and more! Hikes depart from the trailhead every five minutes and are 35-40 minutes in length; the final hike will depart at 7:25 p.m. Festive fun continues throughout the evening, and includes live animal encounters, a hay climb, fall themed crafts, and STEM activities from the Ann Arbor Hands On Museum. Refreshments and snacks will be made available for purchase from a local community group. It’s a perfect opportunity to enjoy Michigan’s autumn weather with the whole family.
Animal Haunts: Sensational Swamps offers attendees opportunities and experiences that are unique to the event and LSNC. “Michigan has a rich diversity of wetlands full of unique and beautiful plants and animals,” explains LSNC’s Huron Pines AmeriCorps member, Trish Brockman. “Animal Haunts: Sensational Swamps is a fun and festive atmosphere that aims to foster an appreciation for our wetlands and inspire people to protect them.”
Animal Haunts is designed to appeal to children 12 years of age and younger, but all ages are welcome and are encouraged to attend in costume. Please join us for Animal Haunts on Saturday, October 19th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Furstenberg Nature Area, 2626 Fuller Rd, Ann Arbor, MI 48105. Registration is required by October 14th. Register online at www.lesliesnc.org or by calling (734) 997-1553.
Michigan animals and plants survive in all weather conditions, and Hike n’ Hootenanny and Animal Haunts is held rain or shine to reflect this. Please dress for the weather, noting the latter half of the event will take place in dusk or dark conditions. Flashlights are encouraged but not required. Trails used during the program are maintained but kept natural and can be bumpy, occasionally narrow, and sometimes muddy. Parking will be available across Fuller Rd. at Huron High School and there is a crosswalk with a stop light at the intersection.
