LESLIE SCIENCE & NATURE CENTER PRESENTS Father’s Day Fungi Hike
LESLIE SCIENCE & NATURE CENTER PRESENTS
Father’s Day Fungi Hike
Sunday, June 16 4-5:30 PM
Celebrate the fun father figures in your life by traversing the woods on a fungi hike! Through a short presentation and a guided walk in the woods, there’s not “mush-room” for anything but adventure in this program!
This program will take place on Sunday, June 16th from 4-5:30 PM starting with a fungi ID presentation in the DTE Energy House. This presentation will focus on species we find in Black Pond Woods.
From there, visitors will set off in small groups into the woods, led by LSNC staff, in which folks will use their new knowledge to search for various fungi!
“This is our very first public fungi hike, and we couldn’t be more excited about it! Not only does it allow us to explore the mysterious kingdom of fungi, but it lets both visitors and staff discover new and exciting organisms right here in our woods. Even their names should get people excited to practice their new skills: from Lion’s Mane to Chicken of the Woods, to the infamous Morels of Michigan, we are anxious and enthusiastic to discover the fungus among-us! – Lannis Smith, LSNC Program Manager
Participants will learn how to classify mushrooms, the ecological role they play at LSNC, and ways to tell when one is edible, or which are easy to grow in your own garden or woods. Resources for how to discover more about mushrooms and fungi will also be given throughout the program. Bring a magnifying glass, a nature journal, and dress for the weather. We’ll provide lemonade, field guides, and plenty of mushroom jokes! Make an afternoon out of your trip by bringing a picnic dinner to enjoy after the hike, and staying for our free, Fireside Fun gathering starting at 6:30pm!
Father’s Day Fungi is designed to appeal to all ages. Please join us Sunday, June 16 from 4-5:30 PM. $5 per person, fathers and father figures are free! Program takes place at Leslie Science & Nature Center, 1831 Traver Rd, Ann Arbor, MI, 48105. Pre-registration is STRONGLY SUGGESTED as this type of event typically sell out.
