Dexter Community Band Opens 36th Season with Free Halloween Concert on Sunday, October 29 Children of all ages are invited to join the costume fun and participate in the Halloween Parade to the music of Colonel Bogey Dexter, Michigan, October 16, 2017 — Dexter Community Band opens its 36th season on a scary note — a Halloween concert where children of all ages are invited to join the musicians in wearing costumes. The 3 p.m. concert will be held Sunday, October 29, at the Center for Performing Arts in Dexter High School, 2200 North Parker Road, Dexter. Admission is free. During the concert, children can join the Halloween Parade to the musical piece Colonel Bogey. For additional concert information contact Karla Linkner at 734-426-2734. Under the direction of William Gourley, the band will play complex, challenging music that explores the world of dark spirits, witches and a ghoulish ball dance. Among the musical selections are: Cauldron,an intense, mingling of dissonant energy by local composer Scott Boerma, director of Bands and associate professor of Music at Western Michigan University; Tam O’Shanter Overture, a raucous piece by Malcolm Arnold based on a Robert Burns poem in which a farmer spends too long at a tavern and winds up battling witches and goblins to get home; The Haunter of the Dark, a walk through the underworld featuring mixed time signatures and tempos by Swiss composer Franco Cesarini; Graceful Ghost Rag, a slow, lilting twist on traditional ragtime by William Bolcom, a Pulitzer and Grammy winning composer who spent 35 years as a professor of composition at the University of Michigan. In addition to the Oct. 29 event, upcoming concerts for the 2017-18 season are: Sunday, Dec. 10; Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018; and Sunday, April 29, 2018. Founded in 1982, the Dexter Community Band is comprised of volunteer musicians from the local area. A registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization, the band performs professional-level symphonic wind music at four free concerts a year. There are also several free “Evening of Ensembles” featuring small groups from the band. For additional information about the band or how to provide financial support, please visit
